Business Profile

About Us... John Swan Limited, a subsidiary of John Swan and Sons plc, operate large and successful Livestock Centres at Newtown St Boswells in the Scottish Borders and Wooler in Northumberland.

John Swan and Sons was founded as a business in 1856 by John Swan and his two sons James and Tom originally out of a Mart premises in Earlston. John Swan and Sons opened their Southern Central Mart in Newtown St Boswells in 1871.

During the late 1800′s and early 1900′s John Swan and Sons continued to open and run Mart operations in East Lothian, Fife, Perth and Edinburgh.

In 1937 A. Davidson who owned the "northern mart" in Newtown St Boswells amalgamated with John Swan and Sons to leave one Auction Mart within the town on the current Mart land.

As the business developed in the 1990′s the smaller Mart's were closed and the business concentrated on key Mart's at Newtown St Boswells and Edinburgh. In 1999 the business initially leased Wooler Mart in Northumberland and then bought the business in 2002.

The Edinburgh Mart closed in 2001 a casualty of foot and mouth and the rationalisation of the national breeding herd and stock whereby efficiencies lay being closer to key stock rearing areas.

Today the business trades out of Newtown St Boswells and Wooler which are two of the finest stock producing areas in Europe.

More Information... The principal Livestock Centre servicing the entire South East of Scotland and situated in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Whilst traditional, the premises are modern and afford accommodation for 18,000 sheep and 5000 cattle with five selling rings.
